SIM swap fraud, a growing cybercrime, allows fraudsters to duplicate SIM cards using stolen personal details and drain bank accounts without victims' knowledge. Criminals gather information through phishing or data leaks, then impersonate victims to mobile providers requesting SIM replacement. Once activated, fraudsters receive OTPs and banking alerts, enabling unauthorized transactions. A Chandigarh case involved Rs 81.89 lakh theft. Warning signs include sudden network loss and unauthorized transactions. Victims should immediately call cybercrime helpline 1930 and inform banks.
