World faces food ‘catastrophe’ if Strait of Hormuz disruption persists: FAO

What Happened

The Food and Agriculture Organization warns that prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could cause global food catastrophe. Twenty to forty-five percent of critical agricultural inputs rely on sea passage through the waterway. Nearly half of world-traded urea fertiliser exports from Gulf countries are blocked. Current food stocks absorb shocks, but higher commodity prices are expected later this year. Poorer countries face greatest exposure due to planting calendar delays.
