The Supreme Court directed a husband to pay Rs 5 crore permanent alimony to his wife, rejecting his argument that her education absolved him of financial responsibility. The bench annulled the marriage solemnized January 20, 2010, and terminated all related proceedings. The couple had lived separately since October 2016 with two children in the wife's custody. The husband had defaulted on Rs 80,000 monthly maintenance ordered in February 2019, accumulating arrears exceeding Rs 30 lakh. The court rejected his Rs 20 crore counter-claim.
