What Happened

Train services resumed on Sri Lanka's Northern Railway Line after India completed restoration of cyclone-damaged sections using a USD 5 million grant. The work covered three severely affected sections: Maho-Omanthai, Omanthai-Jaffna, and Medawachchiya-Mannar, completed ahead of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. This forms part of India's USD 450 million reconstruction package for Sri Lanka. India has provided approximately USD 1.2 billion in cumulative assistance to Sri Lanka's railway sector.
