Russia and China vetoed a UN Security Council resolution aimed at protecting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. Bahrain proposed the measure, which eleven of fifteen UNSC members supported; two abstained. Russia and China opposed it, claiming bias against Iran. The resolution would have coordinated defensive efforts for maritime safety. Shipping through the strait has nearly stopped after Iran threatened attacks following US-Israel military action on February 28. Global fuel prices have risen significantly.
