What Happened
R Vaishali strengthened her position in the Women's Candidates tournament in Cyprus by defeating Russia's Aleksandra Goryachkina in round 11. She now leads by one point with three rounds remaining and is on track to become only the second Indian woman to reach the World Championship after Koneru Humpy. Her brother R Praggnanandhaa drew with Matthias Blübaum, officially eliminating him from contention in the open Candidates event. Javokhir Sindarov is close to claiming the men's title.
