Jim Whittaker, the first American to summit Mount Everest in 1963, died Tuesday at age 97. The celebrated mountaineer believed pushing beyond comfort zones enables deeper understanding. His philosophy emphasized that taking calculated risks reveals opportunities others miss. Whittaker climbed with his twin brother starting in the 1940s and led the 1990 Mount Everest International Peace Climb. He was survived by his wife, three sons, and four grandchildren.
