What Happened
The UN's International Organization for Migration reported at least 990 deaths across the Mediterranean in 2026, with 765 in the Central Mediterranean alone. Over 180 people died or went missing in five shipwrecks since March 28. The latest incident on Sunday killed over 80 migrants when their boat capsized near Libya. Survivors were rescued by merchant vessels and brought to Lampedusa by Italian coast guard.
