Key Indian state polls begin in test for Modi's party

Voters in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu are choosing new governments in elections seen as testing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party expansion efforts. The five regions have 174 million voters, about 18% of India's electorate. Counting occurs May 4. The BJP currently governs Assam and part of Puducherry but has never formed governments in the other three states, where established regional parties hold power.
