Scientists at SKUAST-K in Srinagar have successfully cultivated morel mushrooms in controlled conditions for the first time. The rare mushroom, locally called Kangaech, naturally costs Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000 per kilogram. Prof Tariq Ahmad Sofi's team studied 1,000 wild locations over five years, identifying 10 strains. Three strains now produce fruit in polyhouses and open conditions. The breakthrough could transform Kashmir's bioeconomy and farmer incomes through premium crop production.
