What Happened
Kataib Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Iraqi armed group, announced the release of American journalist Shelly Kittleson on Tuesday. The 49-year-old freelancer was abducted March 31 in Baghdad. The group conditioned her release on immediate departure from Iraq. Reports indicate she was freed in exchange for imprisoned militia members. Press freedom organizations had called for her safe return during her detention.
