
Willie Walsh, incoming IndiGo chief executive, told the BBC that India's fleet of 50 widebody aircraft is insufficient given the country's 1.4 billion population and growth potential. Widebody planes carry more passengers on long-haul international routes. Walsh joins IndiGo in August, succeeding Pieter Elbers who resigned in March following December's major flight cancellations. Walsh highlighted opportunities for Indian carriers to reduce dependence on Gulf hub transfers and expand globally.
