
Indian merchants played a central role in Hormuz's emergence as a major trading hub from the 13th century onward. Evidence traces Indian Ocean commerce back to ancient times, including Bronze Age artifacts and a 916 AD record of Hindu merchants in Iran. Jagdusha, a 13th-century Jain merchant from Gujarat, conducted extensive trade through Hormuz with Persian and Arabian partners. Maritime linkages between India and the Persian Gulf region date to the Indus Valley Civilization around 2500 BCE.
