India has withdrawn its bid to host the United Nations Climate Conference of the Parties (COP33) in 2028, three years after Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed it. The decision was communicated this month, according to Reuters. An Indian Environment Ministry official informed the Asia-Pacific Group chair of the withdrawal following a review of commitments. India had established a dedicated COP33 Cell in July 2025 for logistical preparations. The reason for withdrawal remains unclear and unannounced officially.
