India's government is scaling up compressed biogas production to reduce reliance on imported liquefied natural gas amid global supply constraints. The petroleum ministry will consolidate five existing departmental initiatives into a single streamlined programme. Compressed biogas can be blended with natural gas in city distribution networks. The focus follows a 45% cut in LNG imports from Qatar due to Middle East tensions. India imported 27 million tonnes of LNG valued at $14.9 billion in fiscal 2024-25, with 40-45% sourced from Qatar and West Asia.
