What Happened

India is considering increasing compressed biogas (CBG) blending in city gas networks from the current 5% mandate to potentially 20% in phases. This shift aims to reduce liquefied natural gas import dependence amid West Asia conflicts. The government prioritizes essential gas use and domestic CBG production scaling. During April 2025-February 2026, 82,000 tonnes of CBG were procured. Approximately 200 CBG plants operate, with 317 under construction.
