What Happened

Worker protests across Indian states demand minimum wage increases as inflation erodes purchasing power. Despite overtime work, laborers struggle to meet basic living costs. Real wages have stagnated or declined since 2011-12, the longest such period in independent India. Rural agricultural wages stagnate while urban regular wages declined 1.2 percent annually between 2011-22 and 2022-23.
