About 850 residents of Ghana Town, Gambia lack citizenship, passports, and national identification despite being born and raised there. The village was founded by Ghanaian fishermen in the late 1950s. Gambian law grants citizenship only to those with at least one Gambian parent. Residents face barriers to public school enrollment, business registration, and bank accounts. Multiple citizenship applications have been rejected based on birth certificates classifying them as non-Gambian.
