What Happened
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is presenting an amnesty proposal to legalize occupation certificates for residential buildings constructed before 2016. The scheme aims to benefit approximately 12 lakh homeowners across 25,000 buildings in Mumbai. The proposal includes 50-100 percent concessions on regulatory fees and penalties. Schools and hospitals will also be included. An occupation certificate is essential for legal occupancy, property registration, and obtaining home loans. Nearly 50 percent of Mumbai buildings currently lack this certificate due to developer deviations, unpaid fees, and structural issues.
