What Happened
Toxics Link, a Delhi-based research group, found high lead contamination in soil near battery recycling units across Delhi-NCR. Analysis of 23 soil samples near recycling facilities showed contamination levels ranging from 100 to 43,800 ppm. Samples were collected from locations near residential areas, communities, and schools. The study reveals significant enforcement gaps in India's Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022 and Extended Producer Responsibility framework.
