Benin's government-backed candidate Romuald Wadagni won the presidential election after his sole opponent Paul Hounkpe conceded defeat. Wadagni, the foreign affairs minister and Talon's chosen successor, will lead the country. Nearly eight million voters were eligible. The governing coalition holds all parliamentary seats. Wadagni faces security challenges from armed groups in the north and poverty affecting over thirty percent of the population.
