What Happened
The Food Corporation of India has recommended relaxing wheat quality standards for Punjab and Chandigarh for 2026-27, allowing up to 20% shrivelled grains, 80% lustre loss, and 6% damaged grains. The proposal follows unseasonal rain damage during harvesting. FCI collected and analysed wheat samples from multiple mandis. Procurement has slowed significantly, leaving mandis flooded with grain.
