The Food Corporation of India has recommended relaxing wheat quality standards for Punjab and Chandigarh for 2026-27, allowing up to 20% shrivelled grains, 80% lustre loss, and 6% damaged grains. The proposal follows unseasonal rain damage during harvesting. FCI collected and analysed wheat samples from multiple mandis. Procurement has slowed significantly, leaving mandis flooded with grain. The recommendation awaits approval from FCI headquarters and the Department of Food and Public Distribution.
