What Happened
Four people died Thursday near Calais, France, while attempting to board an inflatable dinghy for a Channel crossing to the UK. Thirty-eight others were rescued, with one person in critical condition. The dinghy continued toward the UK after the incident. French authorities launched a rescue operation. Crossings have surged recently, with 102 people rescued Wednesday in separate operations. Over 4,776 people crossed in early 2025.
