What Happened
Parliament passed the Women's Reservation Act in September 2023, reserving one-third of Lok Sabha and state assembly seats for women. Implementation was initially deferred until after the next Census and delimitation exercise. The government now plans to implement the act using the 2011 Census data instead. Simultaneously, the Lok Sabha may expand from 543 to 816 seats, marking significant structural changes.
