Asha Bhosle, the legendary playback singer, passed away recently. The author recalls a 2019 NCPA performance where Bhosle performed with tabla maestro Zakir Hussain at Ustad Alla Rakha's centenary celebration. At eighty-five, she demonstrated remarkable presence and active listening. Throughout her career spanning decades, Bhosle recorded in over twenty languages and collaborated with boundary-pushing composers like O.P. Nayyar and R.D. Burman. Her defining characteristic was restlessness and refusal to settle into fixed artistic identity.
