What Happened
Punjab government notified the amended Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Act, 2026, imposing life imprisonment and up to Rs 25 lakh fine for sacrilege against Guru Granth Sahib. Governor Gulab Chand Kataria assented April 17. The bill passed unanimously in Vidhan Sabha April 13. Minimum seven years imprisonment applies to desecration; conspiracy-related sacrilege carries ten years to life sentence.
