The Election Commission of India issued directives Monday restricting political advertisements in newspapers on polling day and the day before voting. All ads must be pre-certified by the Media Certification and Monitoring Committee at state or district levels. Parties, candidates, and individuals must apply for certification at least two days before publication. Elections in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry occur in April.
