
Indian Railways will manufacture two new trains with a design speed of 220 kmph, exceeding the current Vande Bharat Express maximum of 180 kmph. The Railway Board approved the inclusion of two trainsets, each comprising 16 coaches, under the Coach Production Programme for 2027-28. BEML received a contract in October 2024 to design and manufacture the high-speed trainsets. Each coach costs Rs 27.86 crore, with a total contract value of Rs 866.87 crore. The trains will feature steel bodies and operate at maximum speeds of 200 kmph.
