Sir Arthur Conan Doyle claimed a photograph showed deceased Lord Combermere's spirit in his library during his funeral. Lord Combermere's nephew, scientist Campbell Swinton, disputed this. Swinton stated the photograph was taken in 1898 by an American renting Combermere Abbey. The image showed the hall, not the library, where nobody typically sat.
