A Madurai court convicted nine police officers for the June 2020 murders of P Jayaraj and his son Benicks in police custody in Sattankulam, Tamil Nadu. Jayaraj was detained for allegedly violating Covid curfew rules; his son was arrested when inquiring about him. Both were tortured and died from injuries. The CBI-handled case highlighted systemic failures in protecting constitutional rights and preventing custodial violence across Indian states.
